Rural Development Welfare Society (RDWS)

RDWS – Rural Development Welfare Society is a Non – Governmental Organization (NGO) working towards ‘breaking the circle of poverty in the lives people’. Since its inception, RDWS has been concentrating all its efforts on the welfare and development of weaker and deprived sections of the society.
Starting as a small organization in a rural hamlet, the organization has come a long way and presently operating in 65 villages with a well trained field force. This organization has even acquired the capability of conducting training programs in different issues and gained the full confidence of target groups.

Defending the Rights of Every Child through Awareness and Advocacy Program

RDWS has successfully organized a mass campaign with parents and teacher associations and with SHG’s members on the protection of the rights of every child. A Right to education, a right to survival, and a right to participation. This campaign's main motto is to ensure every child has a right to enjoy his/her lost childhood. Cultural activities were organized in traditional form to get the positive attention of people on the protection of the rights of the child in a meaningful way. We have also conducted a mass enrolment campaign that every girl child in school instead of child labor. During the campaign wall posters and banners were displayed in the project area to ensure the participation of local people with a positive motive in Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, and Visakhapatnam Districts, Andhra Pradesh, India.

Swecha Program

We have started ‘Swecha Program to create health awareness among the women and girls about the importance of personal hygiene, particularly during menstrual period. Many women and girls feel shy about talking about problems during menstrual period. A majority of them are adopting age-old practices to ensure cleanliness in internal organs. The old customs and taboos are leading to many health problems. Under the Swecha Project, we are supplying them quality sanitary napkins each costing 28. The adolescent girls who are being educated are helping their mothers in using them. Proper disposal is also explained to them during awareness programs. As many as 3,652 sanitary napkins were distributed to needy women and girls in various villages including Papayyavalasa, Jirikavalasa, Yeeraavanivalasa, Kondaparthi, Basalapadu, Lotugedda and others. Self-help groups which got training in stitching are making those sanitary napkins in RDWS centre located near Gajapathinagaram in the district

Vocational Training

Vocational Training Program is aimed to equip, employ and empower school dropouts and youth and physically disabled persons from downtrodden communities. A number of youngsters today remain unemployable as due to lack of quality education and skill-based expertise. Addressing this concern, Our RDWS has joined hands with POLIO CHILDREN (UK) and Wanitha Wani Association (Germany) in a unique venture to provide certain skill-based training for youth, especially for girls. The Vocational Training Centre at Marupalli has helped to empower 148 women and girls this year through Vocational Training in Tailoring course and successful job placements for all of them as soon after completion of this course. As again this year, we are in process of continuing these VT courses by adding new VT courses like beautician, electrician, plumbing, cell-phone repairing etc. For the both the boys and girls. All these training programs are designed and determined as according to local market demand to ensure that these adolescents age group can receive an adequate opportunity for getting employment to stand on their own feet. Vocational training programs have made a real difference in the lives of countless young people. They build self-confidence and leadership skills by utilizing their unique gifts and talents.

Protect Girl from Child Marriage

Recent studies have revealed that our states of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha are strong witnesses to one of the highest rates of child marriage in our country compared with other states and the practice remains socially acceptable in many parts of the country. Child marriage is driven by a range of socio-economic and cultural factors and maintained by tradition. Factors that increase the risk of child marriage in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha include poverty and fear for girls’ safety and security, as well as a complex tangle of social norms and beliefs. Social norms are informational and spread through personal interaction and networks. They prevail because of perceived or real societal pressure on individuals. Individual actions conform to the norm of society to reduce the cost of social sanction. Due to the nature of social norms, effective communication is critical in challenging and changing them when they are considered harmful as in the case of child marriage. Strategic media and communication, based on information dissemination and dialogue, can provide evidence of the impact of these norms and practices as well as the need for change; promote a new reality of the desired ‘normal’; and address perceived social pressure, beliefs, and expectations through accelerating public intolerance.
